How it works

Your FIRE number in today's money = yearly living costs ÷ withdrawal rate. With yearly costs of 720,000 and the 4% rule, that is 18,000,000. The 4% rule is a common guide that a portfolio can support yearly withdrawals of about 4% of its starting value, adjusted for inflation; it is an assumption, not a promise.

The calculator then moves year by year for up to 60 years: invested amount = last year × (1 + return) + this year's investments. Your yearly investment rises with inflation each year, and the FIRE number you need grows as FIRE number × (1 + inflation)^years. The first year your money reaches that target gives the age shown. This is not investment advice.

How to use it

  1. Enter your age, monthly living costs and amount invested so far.
  2. Enter how much you invest each month and the expected yearly return.
  3. Add inflation and a safe yearly withdrawal rate, such as 4%.

Questions

What is the 4% rule?

It is a rule of thumb that you can withdraw about 4% of your investments in the first year of retirement, then adjust for inflation, with a good chance the money lasts a long time. Many people use 3% to 4% for longer retirements.

How do I calculate my FIRE number?

Divide your yearly living costs by your safe withdrawal rate. At 4%, that is the same as yearly costs × 25. Keep health cover and an emergency fund outside this number, as they serve different needs.
