How it works

Burn this month = costs − sales. The calculator then moves month by month for up to 60 months: cash = last month's cash + sales − costs. After each month, sales grow by your sales growth % and costs by your cost growth %. A month-by-month table covers the first 24 months.

Runway is the number of full months before cash first drops below zero; if it never does within 60 months, the result shows 60+ months. The break-even month is the first month sales are equal to or higher than costs. The lowest cash point is the smallest balance reached. Growth rates are your own assumptions, so try a cautious case too.

What is burn rate?

Burn rate is how much cash a business loses each month: monthly costs minus monthly sales. If you spend 450,000 and earn 300,000 in a month, your burn rate is 150,000 a month.

How do I calculate cash runway?

At a steady burn, runway = cash ÷ monthly burn. This tool goes further by letting sales and costs grow each month, so the runway reflects your plan rather than a fixed burn.

How much runway should a business keep?

Many owners aim to keep at least 6 months of costs as a safety net, and to start raising money or cutting costs well before runway gets short, since both can take months.
