How it works
Sale price = normal price × (1 − discount %). Profit per item now = normal price − cost, and profit per item on sale = sale price − cost. To earn the same total profit, you must sell more: extra sales needed = (profit now ÷ profit on sale − 1) × 100%.
For example, with a price of 1,000 and a cost of 600, profit is 400. At 20% off the sale price is 800 and profit falls to 200, so you need 100% more sales just to stand still. If the discount takes the price to cost or below, extra sales cannot make up the difference, and the tool shows 'Impossible'.

Questions
How much more do I need to sell after a discount?
Divide your normal profit per item by your profit on sale, then subtract 1. If profit drops from 400 to 200, you need twice the sales, which is 100% more. The calculator does this for your numbers and for 5% to 30% off.
Why does a small discount need so many more sales?
A discount comes straight out of your profit, not your price. On a thin margin, 10% off the price can be a third or half of your profit, so you need many more sales to make up for it.
What is a better alternative to a discount?
A free gift or bundle the customer values can cost you less than cash off. Tying the offer to a bigger basket, such as 10% off above a set amount, can also grow your order size instead of shrinking profit.
