College costs tend to rise every year. This planner shows what a course may cost when your child needs it, how far your current savings go, and the monthly saving or one amount today that closes the gap. It is free, needs no sign-up, is for planning only, and your numbers stay on your device.
How it works
Years left = age when the money is needed − child's age now. Future cost = today's course cost × (1 + education cost rise)^years. The money you have already saved grows to savings × (1 + expected return)^years. The gap still to cover = future cost − grown savings, or zero if your savings already cover the whole cost.
The monthly saving needed is the gap ÷ ((1 + i)^m − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i), where i is the yearly return ÷ 12 and m is the number of months, assuming you save at the start of each month. The one amount today = gap ÷ (1 + return)^years. The tool also shows how much the monthly amount rises if you wait three more years to start.
How to use it

- Enter the age when the money is needed and the yearly education cost rise.
- Add what you have already saved and the expected yearly return.

Use a rate that matches what you see in fees for the courses you have in mind. Many families use a figure higher than general inflation, but it varies by country and course. Try a few rates to see the range.
