Family budget planner with the 50-30-20 check
Put in your monthly income and spending to see where your money goes, how much you save, how you compare with the 50-30-20 guide, and how long it takes to build an emergency fund. The planner is free, needs no sign-up, and nothing is saved or sent unless you choose to.
How it works
Essentials are rent or home EMI, groceries, education, transport, bills, health and other loan EMIs. Wants are eating out, shopping, fun and everything else. Savings = income − essentials − wants. Each is shown as a share of income and compared with the 50-30-20 guide: essentials up to 50%, wants up to 30%, savings at least 20%.
The emergency fund goal is 6 months of essentials: essentials × 6. Months to build it = goal ÷ monthly savings, rounded up. A savings rate of 20% or more is marked great, 10% to 20% okay, 0% to 10% tight, and below zero means you spend more than you earn. The 50-30-20 split is a general guide, not a rule.
How to use it
- Enter your household's monthly take-home income.
- Fill in rent or EMI, groceries, education, transport, bills, health and other loans.
- Add eating out, shopping and everything else, then read your savings and tips.
Questions
What is the 50-30-20 budget rule?
It is a simple guide: up to 50% of take-home income on needs, up to 30% on wants, and at least 20% saved. It suits many households, but high rent or school fees can make 50% hard. Use it as a check, not a strict rule.
How big should an emergency fund be?
A common guide is 3 to 6 months of essential spending. This planner uses 6 months of essentials and shows how many months it takes at your current saving. Keep it somewhere safe and easy to reach.
Is my budget data private?
Yes. The planner is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. Nothing is saved or sent unless you choose to copy the result, share it on WhatsApp, save a PDF or send it to us.
What if I spend more than I earn?
Start with the biggest 'wants' line and see what can be cut, then review rent or EMIs if essentials take more than half of income. Small, steady changes are easier to keep than one big cut.
