Stock average calculator: your average buy price
Bought the same share at different prices? Enter up to three purchases to see your average buy price, total invested, today's value and gain or loss. Add a target average to see how many more shares to buy at today's price. The calculator is free, needs no sign-up, and your numbers stay on your device.
How it works
Average price = total invested ÷ total shares, where total invested = (price 1 × quantity 1) + (price 2 × quantity 2) + (price 3 × quantity 3). Value today = total shares × today's price, and gain or loss = value today − total invested. The share must return to your average price for you to break even, before charges.
To reach a target average by buying at today's price: shares to buy = current shares × (average − target) ÷ (target − today's price). This works only when today's price is below the target and the target is below your current average. This calculator is for learning and planning only, not investment advice.
How to use it
- Enter the price and quantity for each purchase; leave unused rows at 0.
- Enter today's share price.
- Optionally enter the average price you want to reach.
Questions
How do I calculate my average share price?
Multiply each purchase price by its quantity, add them up, then divide by the total number of shares. Buying 50 at 500 and 30 at 420 gives an average of 470.
Should I average down on a falling stock?
Averaging down lowers your average but adds money to a position that is already losing. Check the business has not changed for the worse, and set a limit on how much you will put into one share. This is not investment advice.
Why does it not show shares to buy for my target?
The target must sit between today's price and your current average. If today's price is above the target, or the target is above your average, buying more at today's price cannot reach it.
