How it works

Risk amount = capital × risk %. Risk per share = the gap between entry and stop loss. Shares to buy = risk amount ÷ risk per share, rounded down to a whole share. Position size = shares × entry price. If the stop loss is hit, you lose about the risk amount, before charges and any price gap.

Reward-to-risk = gap between target and entry ÷ gap between entry and stop. The win rate needed to break even = 100 ÷ (1 + reward-to-risk), so at 2 : 1 you need to be right about 33% of the time. This calculator is for learning and planning only, not investment advice.

How to use it

  1. Enter your trading capital and the percentage you will risk per trade.
  2. Enter your entry price and stop loss price.
  3. Enter your target price to see reward-to-risk.

Questions

How do I calculate position size?

Multiply your capital by the percentage you are willing to risk, then divide by the distance between entry and stop loss. With 500,000 capital, 1% risk and a 36 stop distance, you can buy 138 shares.

What is a good risk per trade?

Many traders risk a small, fixed share of capital on each trade, often 1% to 2%, so a run of losses does not wipe them out. Choose a level you can accept losing many times in a row.

Is this investment advice?

No. This calculator is for learning and planning only, not investment advice. Prices can gap past a stop loss, especially overnight, so real losses can be larger than the amount you planned.
