How it works
Stock value = plants in stock × average value of one plant. Damage loss each month = stock value × the percentage lost to damage or dying. Missing loss = stock value × the percentage missing or not billed. Monthly loss = damage loss + missing loss, and yearly loss = monthly loss × 12.
The calculation assumes your stock level and loss rates stay about the same through the year. In practice losses often rise in hot or wet months and fall when stock is low, so treat the yearly figure as a guide. Counting fast-moving plants against sale bills each week is a simple way to measure your real missing percentage.

Questions
How do I estimate my monthly plant loss rate?
Count a sample of plants at the start of the month, then count again at the end, allowing for sales and new stock. The difference, as a share of stock, is your loss. Separate dead or damaged plants from ones you cannot account for.
What counts as missing or not billed?
Plants that left the nursery without a sale bill, were sold at the wrong rate, or simply cannot be found. One rate list and a bill for every sale make these losses visible.
How can a nursery reduce stock losses?
Keep one rate list, count fast-moving plants weekly against sale bills, and protect the most expensive plants first since they carry most of the loss. Recording every sale on the same day also helps.
