Freelance rate calculator for freelancers and consultants
Work backwards from the income you want to the rate you must charge. Enter your target take-home income, business costs, tax set-aside, billable hours and weeks off to see your minimum hourly, day and project rate. The calculator is free, needs no sign-up, and your numbers stay on your device unless you choose to send them.
How it works
Amount to bill a year = (target take-home income + business costs) ÷ (1 − tax %) × (1 + buffer %). The tax step grosses up your income, so that what is left after setting tax aside still covers your income and your costs. The buffer then covers quiet months, unpaid work and late payers.
Billable hours a year = billable hours per week × (52 − weeks off). Hourly rate = amount to bill ÷ billable hours. Day rate = hourly × 8, and a 40-hour project = hourly × 40. The tax percentage is your own estimate for planning; check what applies to you with a tax professional.
How to use it
- Enter the yearly take-home income you want and your yearly business costs.
- Enter the percentage to set aside for tax and a safety buffer.
- Enter billable hours per week and weeks off each year.
Questions
How do I calculate my freelance hourly rate?
Add your target income and business costs, gross up for tax and a buffer, then divide by the hours you can actually bill in a year. The calculator does this and shows day and project rates too.
How many billable hours should I assume?
Fewer than you work. Admin, sales, learning and unpaid revisions take time. Many freelancers bill 20 to 30 hours in a full working week. Use your own records if you have them.
What tax percentage should I use?
It depends on your country, income and business setup. Enter an estimate to plan, and check the right figure with a tax professional. The tool does not apply any tax rules itself.
Is this calculator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and runs in your browser. Your numbers stay on your device unless you choose to copy the result, share it on WhatsApp, save a PDF or send it to us.
